Worldwide tomato production exceeds 186,800 million kilos

tomatesAccording to data from Faostat, in 2020, the world produced 186,821 million kilos of tomatoes on 5,051,983 hectares, achieving an average yield per square meter of 3.71 kilos.

According to the analysis carried out by Hortoinfo, in 2020 Spanish tomato production was 3 times higher than that of Morocco and 4.74 times higher than that of the Netherlands. Turkey produced 3 times more than Spain, and China, the first producer worldwide, produced 15 times more tomatoes than Spain.

The Netherlands is the country with the best performance in the world as it obtained an average yield of 48.66 kg/m², i.e. 525.45% more than the 7.78 kg/m² achieved by Spain in 2020 (one kilo lower per square meter than in the previous year). However, one must take into account that the FAO data refers to total production and, while the Dutch production is achieved almost entirely in greenhouses, a high percentage of the Spanish production is carried outdoors.

The world's largest producers

China is the world's largest tomato producer with 64,768.16 million kilos, i.e. 34.67% of the world's total production. In 2020, China devoted 1,107,485 hectares to tomato production and its yield per square meter stood at 5.85 kg/m².

China was followed by India, which in 2020 produced 20,573 million kilos of tomatoes on 812,000 hectares and had an average yield of 2.53 kg/m².

Turkey ranked third with 13,204.01 million kilos grown in 181,879 hectares and a yield of 7.26 kg/m².

The United States ranked fourth with 12,227.4 million kilos, 110,439 hectares, and a yield of 11.07 kg/m².

Egypt ranked fifth with 6,731.22 million kilos of tomatoes cultivated on 170,862 hectares and an average yield of 3.94 kg/m².

Spain ranks eighth with a total production of 4,312.9 million kilos of tomatoes grown on 55,470 hectares and an average yield of 7.78 kg/m². It should be noted that the Spanish production, number of hectares, and yields, were lower than in the previous year.
